Q&A
Sophie Lee constructs a cinematic narrative, allowing the viewer a glimpse into the life of the work's protagonist, Elise. Images and text work in tandem, portraying the beautiful yet fragile young woman, who in Lee's words 'grapples with the expectation of disappointment in a world where she exists, apparently, only for herself'
What ideas were you trying to explore through the creation of this fictional character?
I was originally trying to explore a cinematic narrative through still images and a non linear script.
I was not so concerned in the beginning with what the exact story would be. As I wrote, it became very
personal and within the finished piece I explore feelings of diluted emotion and reflection.
How do you see the relationship between the images and the accompanying book?
I think that one could not stand as strongly without the other. Within the process of making the work
the two processes ran parallel as the character developed. Each give a separate glimpse into this woman's
life. The book can be read or avoided but for me it delicately illustrates some moments within its fragile
pages.
Do you see Elise as being a reflection of yourself in any way?
Yes. The work was not originally intended to be a self portrait but very much developed into one.
I have since become more in tune with this autobiographical way of working and enjoy playing with
my reality and fiction intertwined.
Cinema obviously informs the way that you make your images, are there any specific films that have
influenced this particular body of work?
Jean Luc Godard was a huge influence to me at this time in particular the films Breathless,
and A Bande apart. I was also inspired by the films of Chris Marker.
I am still enthralled with european cinema of the 60's and 70's.
Who are your influences photographically?
Sophie Calle is a longstanding influence. I have recently become entraced by the work of Cornelia Hediger.
The films of Chantal Akerman are inspiring my new work visually and I am also influenced by
several performance artists at the moment such as Eleanor Antin and Lynn Hershman Leeson.
What projects are you working on at the moment?
The largest work I have attempted yet. I am building a set of a bedroom where I will display
a new characters life within a confined space. Documented photographically, through scripts, letters,
and a possible film piece.
What are your plans for the not so distant future?
Firstly I plan to complete my Degree. Then I plan to make some plans...
And finally; James Dean or Marlon Brando?
Definatlty James Dean.
